Grief and God: When Loss Changes What You Believe
When my brother passed, it didn’t just break my heart.
It broke my relationship with God.
Before that, I would have told you I had a deep faith. Not a perfect one. Not a certain one. But a real one. I was seeking. Asking questions. Trying to understand. I felt anchored in something.
And then everything shattered.
I was angry. Hurt. Confused. Disconnected.
For a long time, even saying the word “God” felt heavy. Like something I once leaned on had let me down. Like the ground I thought was solid had cracked open underneath me.
When we lose someone we love, it doesn’t just change our daily life. It changes how we orient to everything.
What we trust. What we believe. What feels safe. What feels meaningful.
I see this all the time in the people I work with.
Grief doesn’t just take the person.
It can take way the foundation you built that helped you make sense of the world.
Sometimes it shuts us down.
Sometimes it makes us question everything.
Sometimes it deepens faith in ways we never expected.
Sometimes it does all of that at different stages.
There isn’t one right spiritual response to loss.
You might feel closer to God.
You might feel furious.
You might feel nothing.
You might feel like the version of faith you had before doesn’t fit anymore.
All of that is real.
After my brother passed, I had to let my faith change. I had to let my questions be honest. I had to let my pain and anger be present.
And over time, something started to open up. Not the same faith. Not the same certainty. But something truer.
If you’re in a place where grief has disrupted what you believe, I want you to know you’re not alone in that. You’re not failing. You’re navigating a loss that shakes foundations.
A question I’ve sat with myself is this:
How has grief changed what I trust?
This is exactly what I talk about in this weeks video:
