What NOT to Give Someone Who’s Grieving This Holiday… (and what actually helps).
You might be making your holiday list right now.
And maybe there’s someone on that list whose world has completely shifted this year.
Someone who’s grieving.
Someone you love and want to show up for… but you have no idea what to give them.
What do you give someone who feels like they’ve lost everything?
What do you give when nothing in the store feels right?
I hear this every year in my grief work, especially around the holidays.
And the struggle usually isn’t a lack of care… it’s that most people are asking the wrong question.
Instead of “What should I give?”
The real question becomes,
“What does their grief actually need right now?”
And if you’re the one grieving, and people keep asking what you want… that question can feel impossible.
Because what you want most isn’t something anyone can wrap.
You want your person back. You want your life back.
You want the world that made sense.
So answering “What do you want for the holidays?” hits very differently.
I get this on a personal level too.
There were gifts I received after my brother passed that were incredibly meaningful… and there were others that caught me so off guard my whole body reacted before my mind even understood what was happening.
No one teaches us how to navigate that part of grief. It’s a lot.
And that’s exactly what I talk about in this week’s video:
What NOT to Give Someone Who’s Grieving This Holiday… (and what actually helps).
This week, I share:
✨ The gifts grievers say hurt more than they help
✨ Why certain well-intended presents can feel overwhelming or heavy
✨ What grief actually needs in this season
✨ Meaningful gift ideas that bring comfort, ease, or grounding
✨ And a few tangible options if you want something you can wrap

P.S. From my own experience navigating grief during the holidays, I can tell you this… timing and awareness matter. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is simply ask what someone needs, and believe them when they tell you.
